It has the world's oldest rainforest's and lots of sandy beaches, tropical islands and colorful coral reefs. For nature lovers and shutterbugs, this is also the place to come face to face with a reat diversity of wildlife in their natural habitats, such as orang utans, proboscis, monkeys, sea turtles and, if you are lucky, the world's largest flower, Rafflesia Forest and Hot Springs in Sabah Do not like to climb mountain? Well, you can still enjoy the sights and sounds around Moutn Kinabalu without doing much vertical exercise. Just take a drive to Kinabalua Park, which is juts about 2 hours from Kota Kinabalua. The park is Malaysia's first Unesco World Heritage Site. It encompasses Mount Kinabalua and covers an area larger than Singapore. From the park's headquarters, take a stroll on one of the walking trails and enjoy the serenity, fresh air, tiny creatures and flora along the way. M sharp-eyed travel mate managed to spot a family of proboscis monkeys before our boatman did. Look out for other monkeys, birds, fireflies and crocodiles too. Bring along your binoculars or a camera with zoom lens. And do not forget to take a poncho because you never know when it might rain. The Sand, Sea and Seafood in Sabah In less than 20 minutes, you can hop from city to coral life - that is how close the nearest snorkel and drive sites are to Kota Kinabalua. The Tunku Abdul Rahman marine park has five islands, which are surrounded by extensive coral reefs. You an take a short boat ride from the mainland or check into one of the island resorts for an idyllic escapade. Do not worry if you cannot swim or snorkel. You can walk under the sea while keeping your head dry and your glasses on - with the Sea-walker air-hosed helmet. While you may feel a bit clumsy with the bulky fish-bowl helmet, you can breathe through your nose underwater. And to refuel what you have lost from all that swimming, sea walking or lazing around, hop to Manukan Island for a yummy barbecue buffet lunch under the shade of the coconut trees.

The influx of Australians trekking the Kokoda Trail in PNG has resulted in an increased awareness of the plight of our closest neighbour. Trekkers arriving in Port Moresby for the first time are struck by the squalor of the settlements surrounding the city, the countless thousands of unemployed people, and the forbidding razor wire wrapped around every house in the city. After spending their first night in a heavily guarded 4-star hotel they catch a charter flight over the Owen Stanley Ranges to the village of Kokoda. As they move from the airfield, which was a key factor in the decision to send troops to Kokoda in July 1942, they are greeted with shouts of ‘Oro! Oro! Oro!’ (Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!) as they climb the plateau towards the village. ‘Kokoda’ is an Orokaiva word meaning ‘place of skulls’. Australia’s first Victoria Cross winner, Private Bruce Kingsbury was buried here. His body was transferred to Bomana War Cemetery after the war. On the north western edge of the plateau is a large generator installed when PNG was governed as a mandated territory by Australia. It has been idle for more than 20 years and the network of power poles connecting houses and administration buildings are derelict and rotting. A large disused concrete tank is a haunting reminder that the village once had a water and sewerage system. As trekkers follow the footsteps of the brave back along the track they come into direct contact with remote village communities. On day 3 they arrive at Templeton’s Crossing which is the boundary between Oro and Central Province. The Orokaiva and Mountain Koiari clans in this area have been converted to the Seventh Day Adventist Church. They stay converted under the watchful eye of local pastors who conduct church services twice daily at 6.00 am and 6.00 pm. Children with angelic voices and swollen bellies sing hymns in perfect harmony. A noticeable aspect of village life is the absence of young men who are either working in distant gardens or have gone down the track to seek better opportunities amongst the bright lights of Moresby. Older men sit around their huts while women care for the village, nurture the young and prepare the meals. Those who venture down to Moresby find there is little work available and are soon reliant on their ‘wan tok’ system for sustenance. Some turn to crime to meet basic needs while others join the fasting growing industry in the country – security! Thousands of uniformed guards with fierce dogs are trucked into the city before dusk each day to stop their own people trying to breach the razor wire fortresses around Moresby. Back in the villages trekkers notice basic Aid projects designed to support subsistence living in remote areas. Water systems, classrooms and medical centres are in various states of repair due to a lack of recurrent funding for maintenance, school/medical supplies and wages. Despite these daily challenges villages are warm, friendly and generous with their offerings of food and assistance to trekkers. The legacy of their ‘fuzzy wuzzy angel forbears is evident to all who trek Kokoda. During their ordeal they establish bonds with local guides who tell them of their daily struggle for survival and of their plans for the future. On return to our affluent society many trekkers want to help but they soon find this is easier said than done. There is no guarantee that clothing parcels, medical supplies, electronic goods or even letters will reach the intended recipient due to the lack of a reliable distribution service to remote villages. Phone, fax and email communications are out of the question. Assistance with educational programs are almost impossible to monitor as school fees are easily misappropriated and students often substituted. This may well be the reason why World Vision does not have a sponsorship program for PNG students! The encouragement of ‘village cooperatives’ should be considered as a means of ensuring benefits gained from the emerging eco-tourism industry are shared for the benefit of all. A ‘Council of Clan Leaders’ from each village could be established to manage the cooperative. Such a system would place the responsibility for the development of the village and the care of its inhabitants in the hands of local leaders Issues which would form part of the charter of a village cooperative would be the establishment and operation of community schools and health centres, support for students identified as suitable for further education in Provincial schools, training of medics and nurses and the maintenance/development of basic village infrastructure. There is no shortage of eco-trekkers who will support educational and health programs if they can be assured that their contribution will not be siphoned off by the person with the key to the village mailbox in Port Moresby or misappropriated by influential ‘wan toks’ in local, Provincial or National Government departments. The establishment of ‘village cooperatives’ would also allay much of the frustration of local landowners who are suspicious that they not be getting their fair share of the benefits generated by the emerging eco-tourism industry. All the economic and social indicators say the colonial system of government inherited by PNG at independence has clearly not worked in the land of a thousand cultures. A reversal of the system whereby local village/tribal communities are empowered through the establishment of village councils may just be the panacea the country needs to attract the support of eco-tourists and well intentioned philanthropists.

(I can't even keep track of how many times our family has flown to see family in Kansas City, or have flown out of town family members here, using our Frontier reward miles.) I’ve even been able to grab a ticket on less than 12 hours notice, and it still only cost me $5 a pop. The Frontier Card in actual use. I am the owner of a real estate company in Colorado, and whenever we deal with customers moving from out of state, we encourage them to check into getting a Frontier card as well. The sooner they do, the sooner they start collecting miles toward their next free flight – which quickly translates into a free flight for their next house-hunting trip. I heard Guludo Beach Lodge once described as “A tropical haven on a deserted beach in northern Mozambique” and that evoked a picture in my mind, and unlike other times, the picture and reality were the same. To start at the beginning, access to the lodge isn’t easy, with a choice of Dar es Salaam, or Johannesburg as the international arrival. Having experienced the flights out of Dar es Salaam previously when going to Zanzibar I wasn’t in a hurry to repeat that experience, so we flew to Pemba from Johannesburg which wasn’t too bad. The choices then are helicopter, too expensive, and scary for my wife, ever since we heard a helicopter had come down at Milford Sound in New Zealand, and we’d seen it take off. My wife won’t go by boat, which left us the only and very bumpy option which is by road, which takes over three hours and goes through the Quirimbas National Park. The new airstrip will add a fourth option, probably not acceptable to my wife either!! Guludo Beach Lodge is just a fabulous sight a deserted beach, which makes you want to quickly strip off and swim in the warm absolutely clear water, which we did, before examining our accommodation. We are talking sort of large tents like bandas, on a raised platform, with thatch, open at both ends, strung out along the ocean front, with beautiful sea views, and actually quite private. The marble and bamboo showers are open air, and everything is quite rustic. All the bedroom furniture has been made locally, but is very comfortable. This includes a large carved king sized bed, with mosquito nets, and the usual wash hand basin, wardrobe etc. At this point I have to tell you, there is no electricity or running water, and how it works is that your shower gets filled up with hot water in the evening, and then it is reheated by the sun during the day. Shaving water is delivered hot in the early morning along with coffee and cakes. I found this somewhat basic, but it worked although I missed my electric razor. It would be fair to say we would have missed Guludo altogether if we had read the small print about the sanitary arrangements properly, although I suppose if there was a family of four sharing it wouldn’t matter so much. The remaining accommodation is a restaurant which doubles up as the bar, and a small seating are, but as there are only around 9 or 10 bandas, you don’t need much more. The food is outstanding if you like freshly caught seafood, and fruit, and home baking. You could watch your next meal being brought in by local fishermen!! The beach is fabulous, as befits one of the top twenty beaches in the world, and is deserted. Because there are islands offshore it was calm clear and safe, and the only real drawback was that it could be too shallow at low tide. To finish, this is a beautiful escape, probably best for four or five days, post safari, although there is a great opportunity to combine it with elephant spotting.

Bulgaria like spain 30 years ago ..

Before one of my recent trips to Bulgaria, I was surfing the net for information about the country in general. I came across a line on a property website that claimed “Bulgaria is like Spain 30 years ago”. It set me thinking……… When I was in my early teens I travelled across Europe with my younger brother and parents every summer. We would just set off with no clear plans as to where we were going to end up, but a rough idea of when we would be back, which was basically when we were down to our last pound note! We didn’t have the luxuries I or my children take for granted as today’s seasoned travellers – such as crisp clean hotel beds and room service. We either had an over - ladened roof rack, stacked high with our camping gear and clothes, or if we were a little better off that summer, we had a second hand caravan hitched to the back of our old car. I remember the caravan was always sold on our return to tide us over while Dad went back to work. I vividly remember one summer, when my father had ingeniously welded together two bread vans – yes bread vans and made them into a camper van, but the really clever bit was, when we arrived on the camp site, the rear section slid out, to give twice the living and sleeping area – although not very good for the “street cred” of two cool 70’s teenagers - we certainly had fun. My point is, we saw and experienced on those adventures, some of the most traditional and native parts of France, Italy and most of all Spain. So, is Bulgaria like Spain 30 years ago? Well, in my humble opinion – yes, in many ways…………... The roads for instance – in Spain, their motorways were simple dual carriageways, poorly maintained and infrequent. Until this year - Bulgaria’s roads were very similar – where you would hope to have found a sturdy motorway you might find a two-laned, pot hole ridden, carriageway, unfit for donkeys never mind cars – and in-land, donkeys were more common! This year however, I am pleased to note, that with EU funding the new motorway is nearly finished and many of the main artery roads have now been re-surfaced – but the “four by four” transport still most commonly used in the quaint rural regions is still the donkey and cart! Just like the Spain of my youth. The toilets – I remember many tears in my youth, where I had the embarrassment of squatting down behind a tree, at the side of a dusty Spanish road, with my nether regions exposed to any passing insect or giggling doe eyed Spanish boy, because I just couldn’t travel any further looking for an English style toilet to sit on! We had travelled mile after mile, because I had stubbornly refused to use the traditional Spanish “squat pot” – a smelly hole in the ground, with a porcelain tray with dirty footprints on either side, giving you a hint as to where to put your feet! Yuck!! But I wonder, was the tree any better? Over the past three years I have travelled the length and breadth of Bulgaria, on my business travels – not looking for an English style toilet to sit on, but certainly wishing I could find one!! Mile after mile, I have refused to visit their “squat pots”, but I am happy to report that they are now cottoning on – many of the little roadside cafes and bars of the rural regions have now been re-furbished, and you can find more and more “proper” toilets”, and in the tourist resorts, it would be very unusual to have to go looking for your own private “tree”! The people – one of the things that stands out from my childhood holidays are the memory’s of the people in Spain. They were always so eagar to please, particularly when you escaped into the countryside. I remember many occasions when we were given fruit from the trees and drinks from the villagers, even though there was no cafй to speak of, the people genuinely wanted to meet us, to try and chat to us and always to shake hands – that way they could brag to their friends and relations that they had met the foreigners! Bulgaria today is very similar. As I travel across Bulgaria, from village to village, acquiring property and land, I have the good fortune to meet many Bulgarians – mainly the older generation, the grandmas and grandads left behind to tend the crops. You can see them in summer particularly, bent double from years of hoeing the land that their fathers and their grandfathers tended. Working away in their cut off wellies, with their 80 year old daughters bringing them a glass of home made rakia or beer – they break off to tell you, proudly, how many generations have ploughed those fields, how many brothers and sisters they have left and thrust upon you the fruits of their labours – literally, the largest bulbs of garlic I have ever seen, apples, plums, carrots – you name it they grow it. I suppose when you bear in mind that they get the equivalent of less than Ј10 per month in pension, they have to grow everything and anything they can, to either eat or exchange with their neighbours. This is an old way of life, a harsh and un-comfortable way of life, but also a calm and un-complicated way of life – many of us, who rush from one crisis to another, watching the clock, reporting to the boss, struggling with the bills, are looking towards this sort of calmer lifestyle for our early retirement. Many of my clients, whilst not looking to spend generations farming the land, are certainly looking for the peace and tranquillity that comes with rural living, whether it be in the Spain of yesteryear, or the Bulgaria of today, the opportunities to settle in some of the little villages just 30 or 40 minutes from the coast have never been greater. From as little as Ј8,000 or Ј9,000, British people are settling in these villages and breathing life back into these havens. Renovating and building properties, alongside their grateful and friendly neighbours, this is a new kind of heaven. You may have a nice 4 by 4, whilst your neighbour has a horse and cart, and you may have a luxurious pool, whilst your neighbour bathes in an old tin bath, and your pension may buy a whole years groceries in one month – but your neighbours won’t mind, they will still share with you what they have, still watch out for you, so they can greet you with a smile and a handshake….. So is Bulgaria like Spain was 30 years ago? Well in my opinion yes, but Bulgaria is moving faster, learning quicker and has an honesty about it that Spain lost somewhere along the way - Go and see for yourself – Bulgaria has so much to offer everyone.

Actually, she lived in two RVs, one after the other. The first was a 20' motorhome. Those of us who were "full-timers" rather than vacationers joked about the way to get along with your spouse in a small RV. Whenever you meet going in opposite directions, hug and pivot. We hugged and pivoted in the tiny 20' motorhome for 365 days. Then we "moved up" to a 30' 5th wheel and continued to hug and pivot for another 365 days. It was part of keeping a happy marriage while living 24/7/365 in a small RV. RV Bathroom Furniture RV bathroom furniture is another part of living in a small RV. (Note: Every RV is small when you live in it.) RV bathroom furniture must be ready to "hug and pivot" to work in as little space as possible. RV bathroom furniture has several requirements. It must be… 1. Lightweight: Weight is very important when traveling in an RV. The more weight you put into RV bathroom furniture, the harder you will work your engine. You may also slow your travels. Think lightweight! The wooden magazine rack may look better, but the plastic one may weigh less. 2. Practical and efficient: Add nothing that doesn't earn its keep. RV and camping stores offer hundreds of appealing gadgets. Some serve no real purpose, or do not fulfill promises. When you look at bathroom furniture, consider what it will do for you. Look around to see if there is another item that will better do the job. Small baskets may help you organize, but small boxes may do it better. 3. Mildew-resistant: An RV bathroom is a small, closed space. Unless you want to spend hours scrubbing mildew, make sure all bathroom furniture is mildew-resistant. Shower curtains or pleated doors should be treated to resist mildew. Shower hoses should, too. If you need a curtain or shade at the window, get one in mildew-resistant material. 4. Easy to clean: Most people use an RV for vacations and do not want to spend their time cleaning the bathroom. Look for bathroom furniture that is smooth, free of seams and cracks that collect dirt, mold, and mildew. 5. Stable: Any RV bathroom furniture you add must stay in place when traveling rough roads. Even if you don't plan to go off-road to a remote campsite, you will encounter tough patches in road construction. Items that will not stay put require frequent packing and unpacking. RV bathroom furniture that does not meet these criteria should be considered carefully. Chances are good that you will trash it or replace it soon if it fails in one or more points. RV Bathroom Remodel An RV remodel of the bathroom gives you opportunity to put some of these principles into practice. For example, an RV tub may have a glass sliding door. It looks good, and you found a piece of 2x2 that keeps it from sliding while you're traveling. If you replaced it during your RV model, however, you could lighten your load. Install a lightweight, accordion pleated door in its place. The lighter door will lock in place for travel. Your RV remodel might be even more radical. You may decide that no one uses that tub. Showers are quicker. Replace the tub with a white corner shower, opening up storage space. A fiberglass shower is a piece of bathroom furniture that is practical, efficient, mildew-resistant, and easy to clean. One-piece, seamless construction installs easily with Super Grip Foam Tape. For less weight, use a shower curtain. Attach a small fastener to hold it in transit. An RV remodel might also take bathroom furniture from the hall and put it in the bath.
