How being narcoleptic is not funny

Copyright 2006 Eva Moffat I keep falling asleep, even first thing in the morning after eight hours sleep the night before. Being a perpetual student, I’m always trying to learn something, but the minute I pick up a book to start reading / studying, I go to sleep. Also I enjoy going to meetings / seminars / workshops, like the dormouse in Alice in Wonderland I sleep right through them. Sometimes this can be quite hilarious, especially if I’m at a meeting. I don’t know how it happens, but I will wake up long enough to come out with a relevant suggestion, then I go back to sleep. But I can assure you that whatever is wrong with me it’s not contagious. You can’t catch it off me, even if I breathe on you. I know now I have Narcolepsy. Yet I had it for twenty-years before I knew what I had. Narcolepsy is not an illness. It’s not a disease, I won’t die from it, unless I fall asleep while crossing the road; no it’s a condition that I have to live with for the rest of my life. How long have I had it? About 45 years. It was just after my younger daughter Susanne was born, about 1962, that I found myself having to have an afternoon nap along with my two daughters. But with having a two year old and a newborn baby, plus a husband and house to look after, it wasn’t surprising that I was tired. So life went on. I used to read to the girls at bedtime. Problem was that I would fall asleep midsentence. Michelle my eldest daughter would wake me up shouting, ‘What happened next mum?’ When the children were in double figures I started work again. But because of my falling asleep on the job, I kept having to look for new jobs. My CV’s had to have a few porkies in them. Then in 1971 I was accepted as a Student Nurse. I got through two years of my three-year course, sleeping through the lectures, then having to read my textbooks in order to keep up with what I should have learned in class, even passing my exams. But eventually I had to leave my nurse training as my constant sleeping meant there was a possibility of me harming a patient; without meaning to of course. What Was Wrong With Me, Other People Didn’t Keep Falling Asleep? Even though I worked in a hospital for just over two years, nobody picked up on what was wrong with me. Me And Further Education As I had left school at fifteen I had no educational qualifications. So being a sponge for knowledge, at aged thirty-one I went back to school. I would see my daughters off to school each morning, then I’d go to school ‘Mums’ School. I studied for a year and came out with six GCE O’Levels. I say studied and I meant double studied. I once again slept through all the lectures, so I had to study my textbooks by night. It Was Twenty Years Later That I Found Out What Ailed Me In 1981 I read a letter in our local newspaper. Dorothy Hand wanted to start a support group for Narcoleptics. She described the symptoms. Now at long last I knew why I was always falling asleep, I wasn’t alone with the problem of always nodding off, and what I had, had a name. Narcolepsy. I went to the first meeting. There were thirty of us. We sat in a large circle. Each of us in turn stood up and told the rest of the group what our problem was One man was a long distance lorry driver, he had to pull into a layby every half hour in order to have a little doze. Another man didn’t dare to laugh or he’d fall to the ground in helpless heap. He also had Cataplexy. Most of the people there had already been diagnosed as having Narcolepsy. I went away from that meeting knowing at long last there was definitely a reason why I kept falling asleep. I was encouraged by the group to go and see my doctor as soon as possible. I had been to my doctor some years earlier, but he said I was probably bored, so that was why I kept falling asleep. I have never been bored in my life. So a couple of days later, I went to see my doctor. Just by a stroke of luck, my doctor was on holiday, so I saw a locum. This time I didn’t tell him my symptoms and hope he’d work out what was wrong with me, but I asked him, ‘What do you know about Narcolepsy?’ ‘Sit down,’ he said. ‘Tell me all about it.’ So two weeks later, I was at the hospital seeing a Neurologist. After various tests, he confirmed that I did have Narcolepsy. This surprised my husband, who had accompanied me to the hospital, because he truly believed that I was just tired, as I was on the go sixteen hours a day. I think ten of those hours were spent in a semi waking condition or maybe a better description would have been like a zombie. When the Neurologist confirmed that I did have Narcolepsy, he also told me I had it mildly. So he gave me some medication that turned out to be Amphetamines. I remember taking one tablet and soon after, I started feeling sick, so I flushed the rest down the toilet. I have never taken any medication for it since then. Over the past twenty-five years I have seen people with much more severe symptoms of Narcolepsy than I have. Medication does mean they don’t sleep as much as they would without the medication, but as time passes, the dosage has to be increased regularly. Thankfully, frustrating as it is to be sleeping my life away, I am no better or worse than I was when I started with Narcolepsy forty-five years ago. But I consider myself lucky. Apart From Falling Asleep Frequently, What Else Happens? Others that have Narcolepsy, besides having the sleeping bouts, called EDS (Excessive Daytime Sleepiness throughout the day, also have Cataplexy. This is brought on by an emotion, could be laughing, crying, joy or sorrow. Their muscles give way, and they will fall to the floor in a helpless heap. Unfortunately, while in this helpless state on the floor, they are fully aware of what is going on, but for the few minutes it lasts for, they are unable to move or speak. There are more minor things that I do suffer from. One is called Restless Legs, although I do realise that Restless Legs are not just for Narcoleptics. And the way I can fall asleep any time of the day, you would think I’d have no trouble falling asleep when I do officially get into bed. But that is not the case. Sometimes it can take me up to an hour to drop off to sleep. Then I sleep about two hours and wake up again. This sleep pattern can go on right through the night. Some Other Problems That Can Go Along With Narcolepsy · Learning Difficulties and Memory Impairment · Short Attention Span · Eye Fatigue · Binge Eating · Alcohol Sensitivity · Lack of Sexual Interest · Depression · Automatic Behaviour Is It A Common Problem? Narcolepsy is a condition that can strike anybody at anytime. Although some people have Narcolepsy as children, other people, myself included first start with the symptoms in their early twenties. There are said to be about 10 000 cases in the United Kingdom, but there are Narcoleptics all over the world. Male or female, rich or poor. From a street cleaner to a Prime Minister. Colour, race or creed, Narcolepsy does not discriminate. Not a proven fact, but it is believed that Winston Churchill had Narcolepsy. Can Narcolepsy Be Cured? No Narcolepsy can’t be cured. Once a Narcoleptic always a Narcoleptic. Medication can help the Narcoleptic to live a better quality of life, but I couldn’t say a normal life. Some days are better than others. It becomes difficult to plan things, because as a Narcoleptic, I never know what I’m going to be like from one day to the next. So with Narcolepsy being a way of life. I just have to get on with living as best I can.

Is winstrol an effective cutting drug

Winstrol is commonly known as a cutting drug. It means that the drug is often used for cutting cycles. It is not a very effective compound for treating anemia, but people wouldn’t argue for its use in a bulking cycle. Many people prefer to use Dianabol or Anadrol for cutting cycles, but Winstrol is more effective drug. Winstrol actually is the drug in which Stanozolol is the key substance. Stanozolol is an anabolic steroid, a testosterone derivative that makes Winstrol like any other common anabolic steroid which helps in increasing strength without any excess body weight gains. One of the plus points of Winstrol is that it doesn’t convert into estrogen. Winstrol was first developed by the Winthrop Laboratories in 1962, and since then, the drug has been coming in two forms – oral and injection. Winstrol is the anabolic steroid that can be ranked equal to Dianabol and Deca Durabolin on the list of anabolic steroids, as far as their effectiveness, and potency is concerned, as it is purely a testosterone derivative, an androgenic hormone produced by the testes which is responsible for the development of the male secondary sex characteristics. Winstrol certainly is one of the most popular bodybuilding anabolic steroids. Winstrol has many benefits as it can be used in many conditions to cure many diseases in both animals and humans. In medical field, the drug is used as a medicine for treating anemia and hereditary angioedema, which is responsible for causing swelling of face, genitals, bowel wall and throat. In animals, it is used to treat weak muscles and is prescribed to improve muscle growth, to improve the production of RBCs, increase bone density, and to stimulate the appetite of weak animals. Where Winstrol has so many benefits, it does have some side effects also. Some of the side effects include: allergies, choking, difficulty in breathing, swelling of lips, arms, face, breast tenderness, enlargement of breast tissues in males, voice deepening, clitoral enlargement (females), headache, acne and difficulty in sleeping. The drug however is approved by FDA, but the agency allows the use of the drug under doctors’ prescription.

5 Htp nature s anti depressant

What is 5-HTP? The Griffonia Extract is rich in 5-HydroxyTryptophan (5-HTP), which comes from an African vegetable, the Griffonia simplicifolia seed, and contains 30% 5–HTP. 5-HTP is an amino acid that is a direct precursor of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter having pain soothing and relaxing effects. 5-HTP is not present in significant amounts in a typical diet. The human body manufactures 5-HTP from L-tryptophan, a natural amino acid found in most dietary proteins. However, eating food that contains L-tryptophan does not significantly increase 5-HTP levels. 5-HTP and Serotonin 5-HTP is the precursor to serotonin. It improves mood, anxiety and is beneficial in weight loss. 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is the intermediate step between tryptophan and the important brain chemical serotonin. There is a massive amount of evidence that suggests that low serotonin levels are a common consequence of modern living. The lifestyle and dietary practices of many people living in this stress-filled era results in lowered levels of serotonin within the brain. 5-HTP and Carb Cravings Researchers believe that inadequate serotonin levels are in part responsible for the desire to overeat. Not surprisingly, obese individuals who crave carbohydrates usually show abnormally low levels of serotonin. Taking a 5-HTP supplement half an hour before a meal can " turn off" cravings and hunger pangs by feeding the brains carbohydrate satiety center. In this way 5-HTP can be a great asset as part of a weight-loss regime. 5-HTP and Addiction The use of many addictive substances, such as tobacco, alcohol, caffeine and certain narcotics, elevates serotonin levels. When these substances are eliminated, serotonin levels drop drastically, causing anxiety and cravings. Taking 5-HTP can stabilize serotonin levels and help minimize the symptoms of withdrawal. 5-HTP and PMS PMS sufferers report pain relief, as well as decreased irritability and mood swings from using 5-HTP. The supplement works by countering the hormone-induced decrease in serotonin levels that occur naturally during menstruation. 5-HTP and Sleep Because of its calming effect, many rely on 5-HTP to alleviate stress-attacks, as well as to encourage restful sleep. Unlike sedative drugs, 5-HTP is not associated with unwanted side effects, such as disturbed sleep patterns or grogginess. It can be taken regularly one hour before retiring as a remedy for insomnia. Side Effects Very high intakes of 5-HTP have caused muscle jerks in guinea pigs and both muscle jerks and diarrhea in mice. Injected 5-HTP has also caused kidney damage in rats. To date, these problems have not been reported in humans. “Serotonin syndrome,” a serious but uncommon condition caused by excessive amounts of serotonin, has not been reported to result from supplementation with 5-HTP; in theory it could be triggered by the supplement. However, the level of intake at which this toxic effect might potentially occur remains unknown. Warnings 5-HTP should not be taken with antidepressants, weight-control drugs, other serotonin-modifying agents, or substances known to cause liver damage, because in these cases 5-HTP may have excessive effects. People with liver disease may not be able to regulate 5-HTP adequately and those suffering from autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma may be more sensitive than others, to 5-HTP. These people should not take 5-HTP without consulting a knowledgeable healthcare professional. The safety of taking 5-HTP during pregnancy and breast-feeding is not known at this time. Conditions with low serotonin levels helped by 5-HTP: • Depression • Obesity • Carbohydrate craving • Bulimia • Insomnia • Narcolepsy • Sleep apnea • Migraine headaches • Tension headaches • Chronic daily headaches • Premenstrual syndrome • Fibromyalgia

The importance of clean air

Since air is a necessary resource for every human being, clean air is a great way to keep a body healthy and happy. Although all of the air that a person is exposed to may not be able to be cleaned, the air inside a home or building can be regulated to ensure it is of top quality with air filters. Contaminated indoor air can contain many toxins such as dust, dirt and pollen. These contaminants can easily go undetected in indoor air but can cause symptoms in people such as the outbreak of an allergic or asthmatic reaction. Even many people who don’t feel that they suffer from a respiratory condition can feel the affects or symptoms from contaminated air such as sneezing, coughing or an irritated throat. Since chemicals, gases, odors and contaminants can easily become airborne and cause these symptoms, air filters are a great way to eliminate these toxins from the air before they can cause any harm. Indoor air is re-circulated throughout a home or building with the HVAC system. If this air is contaminated with bacteria or other toxins, these contaminants have no way to escape because the home or building is generally sealed off with windows and doors. If an air filter is used to remove these particles, however, the cycle and circulation of these impurities is stopped dead in its tracks. Since only clean and toxin-free air is released from the air filters, this is the only type of air that is now in the home or building. There are many places that need the efficiency of air filters in order to keep their employees or other people present safe and healthy. In some manufacturing plants or other production companies, chemicals are used in the process of producing a product or good. The constant exposure to these chemicals can cause instant symptoms such as sneezing or coughing and can sometimes lead to long term side effects such as respiratory problems. In order to keep their employees and workers healthy, many of these employers have turned to air filters to remove these dangerous chemicals from the air. The air released from the air filters is cleaned of these chemicals or gaseous materials and is completely safe for the workers to breathe in. Many offices and homeowners with children are also finding how important clean air can be to their health. With air filters removing and destroying many of the airborne bacteria and viruses that may circulate throughout an office building or a home, sickness and illness such as flues or colds are less present. Many office owners have found their employees no longer spread viruses from one person to another. Homeowners have also found that with the help of air filters, their children no longer pass colds and sicknesses to one another, causing the whole household to eventually catch the bug. With the use of air filters to remove these hazardous chemicals, bacteria, viruses, dust, dirt and pollen, the air that is left to breathe in is clean and free of particles. Clean air brings on good health and less sickness, which is worthwhile for homeowners, employers and office owners alike.

Hoodia gordonii is a plant which is mistaken as a cactus since it is a cactus-like plant, but actually it is succulent which means that they belong to the same family. Succulents are desert plants which are made up of fleshy stems and leaves. Hoodia gordonii is a bitter tasting plant with spikes in it. It is known to grow in Kalahari Desert of South Africa. In the late 1930s, a study was conducted by a Dutch anthropologist, who observed the San people who ate the cactus-like plant by removing the skin and spikes in order to suppress their hunger and thirst especially when they are out for long hunting. The CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research), in the late 1960s conducted a study about the cactus-like plant. The study showed that this plant can suppress the hunger and thirst of San people when they go for long hunting. They tested this plant to animals and found out that there were decreased in weight when fed with this plant. A British company had a partnership with Phytopharm, they able to found out the active molecule in the plant and they called it as p57. Three years later, Phytopharm sub-licensed its rights to develop it to Pfizer. The active molecule which is p57 works by tricking the brain and signaling it that you are full and not hungry or thirsty. Due to this, it prevents a person from eating and wanting to eat because you do not feel hunger. So a person can lose weight by eating less. Secondhand smoke still a problem for children

A recent survey looked at children's exposure to secondhand smoke and found that approximately 3 million children 6 years old and younger still are exposed regularly to secondhand smoke in their homes. Administered by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, this study of more than 14,000 households showed that exposure to secondhand smoke occurred more often in lower-income, lower-education households. The survey also found that smoking by visitors accounted for less than 1 percent of exposure. Parents, on the other hand, accounted for 90 percent of the secondhand smoke to which children were exposed. Exposure to secondhand smoke is a serious health risk, and children, whose bodies are still developing, are the most vulnerable. Children who are exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to have asthma attacks, respiratory tract infections and ear infections. In addition, exposure increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in children under 1 year old. Even though progress has been made, the numbers are still alarming. In an earlier study, EPA estimated that exposure to secondhand smoke increases the number of episodes and severity of asthma symptoms in up to 1 million children each year. The agency also estimated that secondhand smoke is responsible for 150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children under 18 months old. This results in 7,500 to 15,000 hospital stays each year. A number of other studies, including one by the California EPA in 1997, support EPA's earlier findings. If secondhand smoke is a problem in your home, take these steps to help reduce your child's exposure. 1. Do not smoke in your home or car. Do not permit others to do so, either. Moving to another room or opening a window does not protect your children from exposure because smoke stays in the air and on your clothes.

Herbal supplements caveat emptor

In countries such as the United States, weight control is a very serious issue that is quite literally a matter of life and death. The U. S. population has one of the largest numbers of obese and overweight people. For this reason, there is now a huge and growing demand for quick, easy schemes to lose weight. Despite the seemingly countless “miracle” diet schemes available to the public, a product or method has yet to emerge which allows for quick, easy and physically safe weight-loss such as herbal supplements. The most well-known herbal supplements are ephedrine or ephedra, guarana, St. John's Wart, and Senna. They generally act as “fat burners” by boosting the metabolism. They may be successful weight loss supplements --- but only in the short term. One should be warned early on about the possible side effects of these so-called “miracle” diet supplements. Like any other medications, herbal supplements are not without adverse effects. A lot of over-the-counter (OTC) herbal supplements that are readily available in pharmacies and health food stores lack the literature about the product. Moreover, shoppers searching for dietary supplements in health food stores may get useless or even deadly advice from store clerks who are not really well-versed about the products they are selling. Some only know that the products are for weight loss and that they are needed to be sold and dispatched for business' sake, convincing every shopper that it is, in fact, the best weight loss pill. In the wake of Congress deregulating the health food industry with the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), the business of handing out unproven remedies has mushroomed to a $15 billion industry. Medical doctors and legitimate herbalists alike are becoming concerned that many people are spending their money for substances that will not help and may even hurt them. Until recently, government oversight and consumer protection were very limited to products that were classified as dietary supplements. But new regulations contained within the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act give the FDA, the federal agency responsible for overseeing the safety of U. S. food and drug products, the authority to oversee the manufacture of domestic and foreign-made dietary supplements, including herbal supplements. The regulations require supplement manufacturers to evaluate the identity, purity, strength, and composition of their dietary supplements to ensure that they contain what their labels claim and are free of contaminants. The new regulations will be phased in over the next three years, so not all supplements are currently tested. The fine line between selling and giving medical advice is of concern to the health food industry too, researchers say. Those who sell supplements should know their product but they should not dispense any medical advice. To be on the safe side, retailers should not go much beyond label statements. In the current deregulated climate, consumers should educate themselves before even setting foot in a health food store, and should read up on supplements before going to the store. They should also get information from someone who is not selling the product. So when it comes to getting advice at the health food store, the quality of the advice being dispensed is anyone's guess, and the environment is definitely agreeing one of the principles of commerce...”caveat emptor,” or “let the buyer beware.”

Prison break coming through the gates of freedom

A lot of people view prison negatively. For them, a prison is a hellish place where the guilty and those who are innocently accused of crimes are locked away to suffer the worst in life. There is rampant violations of human rights. A breeding ground for the worst social evils. The prison cells are usually dark and filthy where many of the prisoners cry out for attention and understanding. Living conditions are far from being hygienic and convenient which pose danger to the physical, emotional and mental health of the inmates. Many of them are suffering from various illnesses, depression and anxiety disorders. A prison or penitentiary is supposed to be an institution where those who are found “guilty” of violating the law are physically confined to serve their sentence. The justice system of any country imposes imprisonment as a legal penalty for the commission of crimes with the end goal of disciplining and rehabilitating them. However, some of those who are in charge of these prisons seem to be the ones who need rehabilitation and discipline. Once a prisoner completes his sentence and is released from prison, he can either change to a better person or go back to his lawless ways. Leaving the penitentiary is a great relief to every ex-convict who is willing to do everything a good citizen does. But as soon he gets out of the confining prison walls is the realization that the social stigma of being an ex-con will follow him wherever he goes. Society may be willing to forgive ex-convicts but may not readily give them a chance to have a brand-new life. Ex-convicts always face the reality that finding shelter can be a problem. Whether they are alone or they have families to return to, there are always the neighbors and the community they have to deal with. People may not easily trust their presence and they will obviously feel the unwelcome treatment and rejection. Starting a new life means looking for a job in order to earn a living. Felons who have paid their debts to society often discover that the road to opportunities are blocked with prejudice. Job opportunities will not give them priority and preference. Ex-convicts experiencing social rejection can lead to a number of adverse emotional and psychological consequences such as social anxiety and insecurity, loss of self-esteem and depression, and post traumatic stress disorder. Social anxiety is simply the fear of being with people. Ex-cons who suffer from this condition find it hard to interact with others. They always feel that they are being watched, criticized or judged negatively by other human beings. It is the persistent feelings of self-consciousness and anxiety. They typically experience a sense of dread and nervousness in the build up to the feared situation, and analyse or 'replay' the situation in their mind when it's over, ruminating on how they could have done better. Sufferers of social anxiety may also experience physical symptoms such as trembling, blushing or sweating. Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects a person's eating and sleeping habits, the way one feels about oneself or self-esteem, and the way one thinks about things. Depression is not just a passing mood that can be willed away. When ex-convicts experience social rejection and get depressed, they may have a hard time pulling their act together. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people who suffer from depression. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs when a tragic event happens involving physical harm or the threat of physical harm. The harm could have happened to the person PTSD or to a loved one, or the person is a witness to a tragic scene that happened to loved ones or strangers. PTSD was first brought to public attention in relation to war veterans, but it can result from a variety of traumatic incidents, such as mugging, rape, torture, being kidnapped or held captive, child abuse, car accidents, train wrecks, plane crashes, bombings, or natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes. Ex-convicts have tragic experiences while being held in prisons. Social rejection adding up to their pent up emotional wounds may trigger a post traumatic stress syndrome. This is why most felons return to prison after a few months of freedom. They end up going back to their old ways due to the pressure of a critical society who are not ready to give them another crack to a better life. A number of non-profit organizations and social welfare groups are now helping those who are getting out of prison walls to move on with their lives by providing them shelter, jobs, counseling and rehabilitation. It is not meant to spoil or pamper them. Only to help them get up on their feet in order to start up on their new journey in life. Most of these non-profit groups believe that given the best scenario, ex-convicts can change and can do everything that good citizens do. Because most people involved in these organizations are reformed felons as well.

Obesity in america today

The Americans tend to lead a fast-paced lifestyle so convenience foods and takeaways always seem like the best option. Its not. Obesity in America has risen more than anywhere else in the world but not only with adults, children are also suffering the same fate! If obesity is not tackled then all around the world will suffer, not just America. Some people in America suffer obesity through medical problems which is not fault of their own and cannot be helped but others are just far to lazy and eat far to much. Americans are taking the lead in obesity and no one seems to be doing anything about it except the medical research teams and endocrinologists who are trying to find ways to battle the bulge. With out the help of professionals it will be very hard for any obese person to loose weight, and they definitely need the support of their friends and family. In 2004, the U. S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ranked obesity as the number one health threat facing America and no one seems to be taking notice and doing anything about it. Obesity not only impacts your medical health but can also lead to lower self-esteem, and cause depression and discomfort in social situations, and is significantly reducing the quality of life among adults or children in American communities. Obesity in America is a growing story and needs to be tackled immediately. Obesity is not a simple condition of eating too much. It is now recognized that obesity is a serious, chronic disease although eating to much does add to the discomfort and problem of obesity. American eating habits are different to many places, they are mainly carbohydrate eaters and that’s where the problems lye. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. A BMI of 30, in most cases, means that an individual is about 30 pounds over their ideal weight. Calculating your BMI is the safest way to determine how overweight you are as it calculates your height to weight ratio to give you a very close estimate to what your weight should be. Obesity in American is a serious and growing problem that is almost out of hand and needs the American people to take a look at each other and do something about it. If nothing is done then obesity is just a time bomb lurking in Americas shadows waiting to explode!

Arthritis pain relief and prevention

Referred to as the nation’s number one crippling disease and the most common chronic disease in people over 40, arthritis affects more than 40 million Americans. And this figure is expected to rise to 60 million by 2020, according to the Center for Disease Control. Arthritis generally afflicts people between the ages of 20 and 50, but can affect all ages, even infants. The average age of onset is 47 and about three out of every five people with arthritis are under 65 years of age. Arthritic expenditures for just one person due to lost wages, medical treatment and other related expenses can come to more than $150,000 in his or her lifetime. And doctors believe there are over 100 different forms of arthritis, all sharing one main characteristic: all forms cause joint inflammation. What can be done for arthritis pain relief? Many things. For example, weight and nutrition are only a couple of factors that play a role in arthritic pain. And yet shedding even 10 pounds to relieve weight from knees and finding the right nutritional strategy can help relieve pain a lot. There are many ways to effectively manage arthritic pain today to find relief. Available are arthritic diets, exercise programs, over-the-counter and prescription medications, relaxation and positive emotion coping techniques. Also available are surgeries, supplements, home remedies, natural and other alternative therapies. When arthritis is first suspected, it would be wise to seek a medical opinion first. Then as time and resources allow, check out the other options. Herbal Remedies For people who suffer from arthritis, dependable pain relief is a vital concern. The agonizing sensations of simply walking up the stairs are discouraging and can drive patients into depression. When someone cannot function properly, their body is not in balance and often; they will become victims of their pain, forcing them to seek alternatives. These people have often tried traditional medications without success, they are often no eligible for surgery and as a result, they will see relieve through natural remedies. Many people are also seeking natural remedies because of the increasing cost of prescription medication. Before discontinuing a prescription medication, consult a physician. However, with a doctor’s approval, there are many natural solutions, which may aid in managing arthritis. A popular alternative to medication for pain relief is acupuncture. Although the pain-relieving effects may be temporary, these sessions can be very beneficial for those who find that drugs or supplements are insufficient or have unacceptable side effects: Cayenne Cream - apply the cayenne cream to painful areas. Cayenne peppers contain an substance called capsaicin which is responsible for their spicy effect. This also causes a burning sensation when it comes in contact with skin, and inhibits the body’s production of substance P which is heavily involved the relaying signals of pain to the brain. Apply the cream two to three times per day for at least one week before making a decision as to whether or not the cream is helping to reduce arthritis pain. It's understandable that many people experiencing pain and aching in a joint because of osteoarthritis reach for the aspirin or another conventional pain reliever. The problem is, these medications can be rough on your stomach, and they do nothing to slow the progress of your arthritis. Even the new COX-2 inhibitor drugs do not act to preserve the joint. [From the doctors of WholeHealthMD]. On the contrary, many natural remedies and supplements have been found to actually reduce cartilage deterioration and even rebuild a patient’s lost cartilage. However, before adding any to your daily routine, check with your healthcare advisor, as supplements can cause adverse reactions and may not be right for your situation. Note that dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration); i. e. do not need to be approved by them, and can include any of the following: plants, fats, proteins and animal organs and tissues as well as herbs, minerals and vitamins. So some supplements may be fine for arthritic patients; however some may not be. Note also that manufacturers may very well promote that their products work great, but they do not have to use standardized ingredients or recipes, disclose side effects that have been reported, nor prove that the products are indeed effective. So use caution. The most popular dietary supplements for arthritis sufferers are chondroitin, fish oil and glucosamine. Chondroitin can draw fluid into the cartilage, improving shock-absorbing ability and weight control, as more weight equals more joint pressure. Fish oils help with controlling inflammation in the body. And recent studies have shown that the cartilage-building substance called glucosamine is effective for the long-term relief of osteoarthritis pain. In some people, glucosamine appears to even slow the deterioration of joints over time and reinforce joint cartilage. Whether or not it can actually reverse the disease is still unclear. In some instances, glucosamine can be used in conjunction with MSM, a substance that appears to slow down the degeneration but is not yet proven and approved. In a nutshell: · Chondroitin - Helps draw fluid into cartilage, improving shock-absorbing ability. · Ginger – Ginger is an antioxidant that acts as an inflammatory with no major side effects. · Glucosamine sulfate – This builds cartilage with very few side effects. · Magnets – Although magnets that are worn as jewelry or placed on bed linens have been reported by some to be effective pain relievers, results are still preliminary; doctors claim that these magnets are not strong enough. · MSM - This organic sulfur is used in the reduction of inflammation. · Nettle leaf - Nettles can reduce a patient’s need for NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) by up to 70 percent. · Vitamin E – This antioxidant is used primarily for osteoarthritis. · Vitamin B is also an effective pain reliever. It works best on the knee and can help stop degeneration that is caused by free-radical molecules, not only in the joints but in other areas of the body as well These are merely a few examples of what an arthritis sufferer can use when seeking pain relief from natural remedies. However, due to the lack of scientific study and testing on many of these alternate treatments, there is no proof of their effectiveness. Nothing can cure osteoarthritis, but nutritional supplements, the application of heat or cold to affected joints, exercise, and weight loss can improve the function and flexibility of your joints, and perhaps even slow the progress of the disease. Conventional over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen, can be very helpful in decreasing joint pain, but they do produce side effects and can cause problems in long-term users. Unfortunately, there is no way to cure arthritis. However, you can delay the onset by maintaining a healthy weight. Exercise regularly and eat a healthy and avoid repetitious movements that cause you pain.

In a state of depression

A car accident, sometimes called Road Traffic Accidents or RTA, are incidents where in cars and other possible objects collide in open traffic. Sometimes traffic collisions may also refer to an automobile striking a human or animal or even another vehicle. According to the World Health Organization, motor vehicle accidents kill an estimated 1.2 million people worldwide each year, and injure about forty times this number. People may not notice this, but the road is far more dangerous than being on air or at sea. Accidents may occur at any place and at any time to any one, even on the most unsuspecting moment. Imagine getting involved in one of these car accidents. In every incident there may be several parties included but there is only one bottom line, every one gets to have damages done on their part. It can be small, large, physical, emotional, material, but still, there would be damages. Let us say you were the fortunate one who had the least injuries and damages. You may have minimal, if none, physical pain and discomfort. But the damages these accidents have brought extend far more than just that. The psychological effects that a car accident brings to a person varies from just experiencing mild depression to a more severe kind of trauma. As we all know, depression is a state of mind caused by several factors, including prolonged stress at work or at home, separation from an important person, or loss of a loved one. Negative thoughts and events can influence a person's state of mind, and can make or break their health as well. Depression bought by traffic collisions or car accidents can bring a state of intense sadness. It can be a major depressive disorder that a person may have melancholies or despair that has advanced to a point of being disruptive to that person's daily activities and social functioning. Flash backs of the event that has transpired will cause feelings of sadness and increase the person's depression. Such a disaster like this would take away the person's self control and could cause excessive emotional upheaval. A traumatic event like a car accident can give out more distress for one person than for another, and that alone could change a person's life. Recovering from depression can be affected by a traumatic event, in this case a car accident. The more difficult and stressful the ordeal on the accident is, the more depressed a person becomes. For example, if a family member is in a coma for several days from a car accident, it would prolong the state of depression of his/her other relatives as well. Car accidents do happen everyday, and it may happen to anyone you know. Keeping safety first, fastening seat belts, and having extra precautions on the surroundings, these little things would help in preventing such accidents on the road. As far as we know, depression often goes along with sadness, and by preventing accidents, one may also help in preventing the feelings of depression.

Asthma education is critical for community health

Rather than treating asthma like a string of isolated asthma attacks, doctors are now treating asthma as a chronic condition that is affected by nearly every aspect of the patient’s life. Instead of focusing on acute care intervention, doctors now focus on daily management, medication and monitoring to help minimize symptoms of asthma and lessen the severity of asthma attacks when they do happen. Asthma education is a key part of that management. By teaching the patient and his family how to monitor his own condition, what causes flare-ups of symptoms and how to avoid them, doctors can reduce the number of hospitalizations and emergency room visits due to asthma. Using a peak flow meter, an asthmatic can keep track of his lung capacity – and seek appropriate treatment if it wanders into the danger zone. Education about asthma can impress upon him the importance of measuring every day – and keeping careful records. Extending that education into the community can literally save your child’s life. Something as simple as spending an hour with a third grade class to show them how to help someone having an asthma attack can pay back unexpected dividends. After all, wouldn’t you rather know that all of your child’s classmates will recognize an asthma attack – and do the right thing when they see one? The administration of your child’s school is another place where asthma education can pay off big dividends. Many schools still don’t understand how vital it is that a child with asthma has his inhaler with him at all times. When schools deny an asthmatic child his right to carry his inhaler for fear that other children will find a way to abuse it, the results can be disastrous. Making the effort to do a bit of advocacy and asthma education can literally make the difference between life and death. Community asthma education can also make a big difference in whether or not children with asthma are properly diagnosed. Many people still don’t recognize the symptoms of asthma unless they see an acute attack – but mild asthma, and the symptoms of chronic asthma can be devastating to a child’s life. Chronic respiratory illnesses, bronchitis, pneumonia and chest pain can keep children out of school and in the emergency room. By educating the community through public service announcements, school outreach programs, clinic visits and physician incentives, many children with hidden asthma can be reached and treated, reducing the overall costs of health care as well as improving the individual child’s health. Like diabetes education ten years ago, asthma education today can help alert parents, identify those who suffer from asthma and make sure that appropriate treatment is available to everyone who needs it. This is especially important in the case of childhood asthma, where the diagnoses and treatments and standards of care so often seem to be inequitable. Asthma education can help ensure that all parents are aware of the standard of treatment that their children SHOULD be getting – which is the first step to ensuring that the children get the care that they require.
